I used to eat cereal like it was my job. Now, cereal actually is my job. If you love cereal as much as I do, this is the treat for you. Go wild shopping in the cereal aisle and fill your cart with samplings from all of your childhood (or, um, current) favorites for fun flavor variety.

Crispy Rice Cereal Bowl

Makes 1 bowl, 8 inches in diameter

Treat Recipe

1 C batch
8 cups of cereal
6 cups of mini marshmallows
4 tablespoons of butter
5 drops each of blue and white food coloring

1 G batch
2 cups of Froot Loops (or another cereal of your choice)
1 ½ cups of mini marshmallows
1 tablespoon of butter

Special Ingredients

Froot Loops (or another cereal of your choice)

Equipment

Parchment paper
Cooking spray
Small mixing bowl, about 8 inches in diameter
Metal spoon
Large spatula

Instructions

  1. Spray the inside of the bowl with cooking spray until it’s well coated.
  2. Mix the C batch recipe: In a large stockpot, melt the butter over low heat until it’s 80 percent melted, about 1 minute 20 seconds. Note: If the butter begins to sizzle, lower the heat. It should melt very slowly.
  3. Add the mini marshmallows and stir gently, coating them with melted butter, about 30 seconds.
  4. When the marshmallows are about 80 percent melted (when you can still see the individual marshmallow shapes but they are beginning to run together), add the blue and white food coloring. Stir for another 15 seconds and then turn off the heat.
  5. Stir gently until the color is well distributed but the marshmallows are still only about 80 percent melted, about 35 seconds (you should still be able to identify individual pieces within the melted ones). Note: If the marshmallows melt too much, the mixture will be too hot to handle—wait 1–2 minutes and then mold quickly!
  6. Add the cereal and mix well, until the marshmallows and cereal are fully combined, about 40 seconds. Do not overmix! Once the mixture is combined, coat the palms of your hands with cooking spray before handling it.
  7. Pour about 90 percent of the mixture into the bowl. Generously coat your hands with cooking spray. Press the mixture to fill the bowl.
  8. Using the remaining 10 percent of the mixture, create a 1-inch-thick lip around the top of the bowl.
  9. While the mixture is still soft, insert a metal spoon at the side of the bowl, then place the bowl in the freezer for 10 minutes.
  10. Repeat steps 2-6 to mix the G batch recipe using no food coloring, and replacing the crispy rice cereal with Froot Loops (or other cereal of your choice).
  11. Remove the bowl from the freezer and, using a large spatula, loosen the treat from the bowl and pop it out onto the parchment-covered work surface.
  12. Pour the Froot Loops mixture into the center of the bowl-shaped treat.
  13. Press the mixture, with both hands, into a mound extending above the edges of the bowl.
