American Flag from Treat Yourself

Let your freak flag (or whatever flag you want) fly, and then eat it. Show your patriotism with this American flag, the perfect potluck treat to bring to a July 4th celebration, or whip up a banner for the team you’re rooting for in the next soccer matchup. Note: The American flag employs a cutting and piecing technique, but to make other flags, you can use the Golf Course template (just fill in the hole) to make a rectangle and then decorate with your choice of icings!

Makes 1 flag, 9 by 14 inches
Treats Recipes
1 E batch (with white food coloring)
4 cups of cereal
3 cups of mini marshmallows
2 tablespoons of butter
6 drops of white food coloring

1 E batch (with red food coloring)
4 cups of cereal
3 cups of mini marshmallows
2 tablespoons of butter
6 drops of red food coloring

1 G batch
2 cups of cereal
1 ½ cups of mini marshmallows
1 tablespoon of butter
4 drops of blue food coloring

Decorating Icing
White

Equipment
2 flag templates (see page 10)
Parchment paper
Large sharp knife
Round icing tip
Cake board (or other serving surface)

  1. Mix the white E batch recipe: In a large stockpot, melt the butter over low heat until it’s 80 percent melted, about 1 minute 20 seconds. Note: If the butter begins to sizzle, lower the heat. It should melt very slowly.
  2. Add the mini marshmallows and stir gently, coating them with melted butter, about 30 seconds.

  3. When the marshmallows are about 80 percent melted (when you can still see the individual marshmallow shapes but they are beginning to run together), add the blue and white food coloring. Stir for another 15 seconds and then turn off the heat.

  4. Stir gently until the color is well distributed but the marshmallows are still only about 80 percent melted, about 35 seconds (you should still be able to identify individual pieces within the melted ones). Note: If the marshmallows melt too much, the mixture will be too hot to handle—wait 1–2 minutes and then mold quickly!
  5. Add the cereal and mix well, until the marshmallows and cereal are fully combined, about 40 seconds. Do not overmix!
  6. Pour the mixture onto one of the parchment-covered templates on the work surface. Generously coat your hands with cooking spray. Mold the mixture over section 1 of the template and shape it until the edges are smooth and the mixture begins to firm up.
  7. Repeat steps 1-5 to mix the red E batch recipe and pour the mixture onto the other parchment-covered template on a separate work surface. Generously coat your hands with cooking spray. Mold the mixture over section 2 of the template and shape it until the edges are smooth and the mixture begins to firm up.
  8. Let both the red and the white treats sit for one hour at room temperature. Then, using a sharp knife, cut the white treat horizontally into 2-inch-wide strips.
  9. Cut the red treat into 2-inch-wide strips to match the white strips.
  10. Starting with the top strip of the red treat, on a fresh serving surface, alternate the placement of the red and white strips, as shown. Gently press each strip together at the “seams” where one color mixture meets the other.
  11. Repeat steps 1-5 to mix the G batch recipe. Generously coat your hands with cooking spray and pour the mixture onto the work surface and mold it with both hands so that it fits in the upper left corner of the striped treat, as shown.
  12. Using white icing with a round tip, draw rows of stars on the blue portion of the treat. Wait 10 minutes, then pat down the stars with your fingers to smooth.
