More Gifts for Mom

Most moms we know love photos of their families (especially if there are any adorable children or grandchildren around!). But, c’mon, it’s Mother’s Day! You can’t just give your mom a plain old family photo. That’s why we love this project from Paper Made — it’s a super-special family photo that you can customize to match Mom’s home decor! How Mom-friendly is that?

Family Portraits

What You Need:

Digital family photos
Access to a computer with a printer and paper
Tracing paper
Pencil
Craft knife
Self-healing cutting mat
Glue stick
Card stock
Larger piece of paper (at least the size of the original photo) for the background
Scraps of various papers

INSTRUCTIONS:

1. Select a digital photo to silhouette. Choose one that has a fairly simple composition and is easy to trace. Enlarge it to the desired size on a computer, print it, and layer a sheet of tracing paper over the photo (fig. below).

2. Trace the full silhouette. Then choose the details you want to feature (such as figures, their clothes, shoes, a pet) and trace them individually (fig. below). Note: Make sure all of your tracings are closed shapes that can be cut out easily.

4. Glue each tracing onto a piece of card stock to give it structure, and let dry. Cut them out.
5. Select a paper for the main silhouette, trace around the template onto the front of the paper, and then cut it out with a craft knife. Glue it to the background paper (fig. below).

6. Repeat step 5 for all of the details, and glue them to the silhouette (fig. below). Repeat from step 1 to create additional portraits.
