Last week’s World Maker Faire was of course all about making. At the Workman booth that meant not only making crafts, robots, and refashioned T-shirts—but also making a difference. We were lucky enough to be joined by members of the team behind DoSomething.org, an organization that “helps young people rock causes they care about.” Whatever your thing—whether it’s animal welfare, the environment, ending discrimination, or any cause that’s important to you—DoSomething.org wants you to find it and do something about it!
To help spread the word, the Do Something crew brainstormed with kids about things they can do to make a difference—things like volunteering at an animal shelter, speaking up about cyber-bullying, and collecting school supplies for homeless children. Everyone who stopped by also got to create and decorate their very own Do Something Super Hero, complete with awesome masks and a passion for action. By the end of the day we had collected tons of pledges from kids of all ages (both the truly young and the young-at-heart) to commit to their causes and help change the world.
Plus, five caring kids won a copy of the new book Do Something!: A Handbook for Young Activists for sharing their plans to make change! Do Something! is packed with all the tools a kid needs to find his or her passion and make the world a better place. (The book will be released this month, and is available for pre-order now.)
The Do Something team had a spectacular day, and we’re so glad they were able to help us in making a difference at World Maker Faire. But wouldn’t you know it—we weren’t able to snap a single photo of the volunteers in the booth! Why? Because they were too busy out doing something, of course!
