Why pony up your hard-earned dollars for an overpriced basket of soaps when a simple, beautiful bar of the homemade stuff is just a mold and some rubber gloves away? If you’re looking for a signature homemade gift to call your own, a soapmaking project may be just the thing for you.
What will it take? Surprisingly, you don’t need much in the way of specialized equipment in order to make soap—you probably already have many of the items in your cupboard. Minus the soap-making ingredients themselves, here’s what a soapmaker’s arsenal should contain:
- Cardboard or newspaper
- Heat-resistant bowls for measuring lye and water
- Heat-resistant measuring pitcher for oils (large enough to hold oils and lye-water, with room for mixing)
- Heat-resistant mixing utensils
- Measuring cups and spoons
- Rubber gloves
- Safety goggles
- Kitchen scale
- Skewers or chopsticks (for swirling)
- Soap molds (and liners or freezer paper)
- Stick blender
- Whisks
- 91 percent isopropyl rubbing alcohol in spray bottle
- Thermometer
- Sharp knife
