Crafternoon: GENERATION T Outer Lace

If the word lace makes you think of rocking-chair grandmas, this laced-up reincarnation will make you think rock ’n’ roll. Though (no joke) I know a very hip grandmother who refashioned a handprinted “World’s Best Grandma” tee from her grandkids to create this punk rock design. “World’s Best Grandma”? Try World’s Best-Dressed. However, this tank top is not for your average grandma and, given its potential for sexy skin-baring, might just be … um … slightly more suited to your figure.

Ingredients

  • 1 T-shirt
  • scissors
  • ruler
  • straight pins

Steps

  1. Lay the T-shirt flat, and cut off the sleeves just inside the seams. Cut off the bottom 2″ above the hem (save fabric for step 5).f0084-2
  2. Depending on your size and the size of the shirt, cut 3″ to 6″ off each side, through both layers of fabric. (The best way to determine this is to try on the shirt and measure the amount of extra fabric you can pinch at the sides.)f0084-3
  3. Use a pin on each side of the shirt to mark where the bottoms of the armholes should be.
  4. Starting at one of the pins, use the point of one scissor blade to poke small holes 1″ to 2″ apart through both layers, down the side of the shirt, 1″ from the edge of the fabric. Repeat on the other side.f0085-1
  5. To make the laces, cut two 1″-wide strips from the length of the shirt bottom cut off in step 1.
Optional: Use ribbon in place of the T-shirt laces.f0085-2
  6. Starting at the underarm, thread one strip through the two top holes, then weave each end in and out of the holes, criss-crossing as you go—as if you were lacing a shoe. Tie the two ends in a bow at the bottom of the shirt.f0085-3
  7. Repeat step 6 on the opposite side.
  8. Remove the pins and try on your tank, adjusting the “laces” as needed.
