Homemade Meat Pies for Man’s Best Friend

From Dinner for Dogs comes one of SIX menu posts designed to feed your family what they love, from Baby to Grandparents (and even the Dog!). See the full menu here!

Dogs love this recipe! During fun family dinners, Fido won’t feel left out of the feast when you serve this tasty meat pie.

From the author: I often add ginger to this recipe as it’s good for the joints and helpful, too, as a blood cleanser. Thanks to the pie pastry, these pies are rather fattening, so even during a festive season, serve only one or two a day. If your dog has two, reduce his or her regular amount of regular food accordingly.

Meat Pies

Makes 8

  • Vegetable oil for greasing
  • 2 cups (450 g) ground turkey, about 16 ounces
  • 1¼ tablespoons finely chopped fresh parsley
  • ¼ rounded teaspoon ground ginger (optional)

For the pastry:

  • 1¾ cups (200 g) unbleached all-purpose flour
  • ⅓ cup and 4 teaspoons (100 ml) oil
  • 1 large egg, beaten
  • ½ cup (50 g) Cheddar or other hard cheese
  • Water

Preheat the oven to 350˚F/180˚C. Lightly grease a cupcake or muffin tin.

Put the ground turkey into a bowl and stir in the chopped parsley and ground ginger (if using). Set aside.

To make the pastry, measure 1¾ cups of flour into a bowl and add the oil, beaten egg and grated cheese. Stir together with a spoon.

Put the dough onto a lightly floured surface and roll out. Cut the dough into 16 discs using a cookie or pastry cutter and use half of them to line 8 cups of the prepared tin.

Add 2 tablespoons of the turkey mixture into each cup. Brush the edges of the remaining pastry discs with water and use them to top each of the pies, pressing them gently around the edges to seal. Pierce the top of each pie with a fork to allow steam to escape while cooking.

Place the pan in the oven and bake for 30 minutes. Once cooked, remove the pies from the oven and transfer to a wire rack to cool.

You can store the meat pies in the fridge for up to a week.

Top Tip:
If your dog is gluten intolerant, replace the wheat flour with spelt flour or a 100 percent gluten-free flour and add 2 teaspoons (10 ml) additional oil. The spelt dough is easy to handle but can be a little crumbly when cooked.
