To celebrate Valentine’s Day, and inspired by the book The List: A Love Story in 781 Chapters by Aneva Stout, we invited several members of the Workman staff to each write a short-form love story in just 5 to 7 numbered “chapters.” Our first love story is written by an anonymous former theater major from the 9th floor who goes by Supporting Role. Enjoy!
The Short List:
A Backstage Love Story by Supporting Role
- You’ll volunteer to stage manage the school musical, despite being over-committed.
- A second-semester senior
- So over Sondheim
- You’ll become smitten with the lead, who has that star quality.
- You’ll both feel awkward at rehearsals.
- But it’s the good kind of awkward!
- The best kind
- So you’ll go even when you’re not called.
- On closing night, an accident will befall you. In front of everyone.
- A broken foot
- A bruised ego
- You’ll spend the cast party in a chair against the wall.
- Not dancing
- Not drinking beer
- Icing your injury
- The lead will sit by you all night.
The format of this story was inspired by the book, The List: A Love Story in 781 Chapters.
