Ditch Energy Bars and Power Drinks

Beware of packaged foods and drinks that promise the world. Sometimes the bigger the promise, the bigger the disappointment. Case in point: many “energy bars” and “power drinks.” Luckily, healthier alternatives are accessible. Learn more below with tips excerpted from Frank Lipman, M.D. & Danielle Claro’s The New Health Rules.

Don’t Believe the Power Drink Hype

Get your kids (and yourself) off the blue-green-orange glowing stuff. Coconut water replaces electrolytes too and is chemical free (though it has a fair amount of naturally occurring sugar, so don’t overdo it). You can also swap in coconut water for plain water in a protein shake, for more flavor.

Energy Bars Sap Your Strength

They don’t belong in your kids’ lunches—they’re full of sugar—and you shouldn’t be eating them regularly either. As a rare treat or in an emergency, have a bar from one of the less-processed brands like Kind or Lara. When you’re grabbing something at a deli, make it raw nuts instead. And get in the habit of keeping some protein shake packets in your bag or desk drawer so you can get a real energy boost when you need it.
