#NationalCerealDay: Mister Krisp Interview

It’s #NationalCerealDay and Workman HQ has some VERY exciting news. We’ll be publishing a book with Jessica Siskin a.k.a. food artist Mister Krisp on June 27 called Treat Yourself!: How to Make 93 Ridiculously Fun No-Bake Crispy Rice Treats. Crafty readers, dessert lovers, and cereal enthusiasts will be able to channel Jessica’s whimsical style in their very own kitchens and create their own crispy rice treat masterpieces. (Cooking experience not required!)

As we gear up for the release of her delicious book, we’re celebrating this sacred holiday by chatting with Jessica about everything cereal.

Workman: What cereal best fits your personality?

Jessica: Fruit Loops. Cause I sorta am one.

Workman: Let’s play Marry, Date, BFF with your favorite cereals.

Jessica: I’d marry Rice Krispies—for obvious reasons. I’d date Frosted Flakes, because Tony the Tiger seems like a good time. My BFF would be Frosted Mini Wheats because they’re sweet on the outside but have a lot of substance.

Workman: Would we sink or float in a swimming pool of cereal?

Jessica: Depends if you know how to swim.

Workman: What cereal is most likely to make the best fashion statement?

Jessica: Cheerios make great beads for a necklace!

Workman: Favorite childhood cereal?

Jessica: Cinnamon Toast Crunch.

Workman: Best book picks for Snap, Crackle, and Pop.

Jessica: As elves, I think they’d enjoy the Harry Potter series, not only because it places focus on magical creatures like them, but also because as a trio they’d probably relate to Harry, Hermione, and Ron.  I’d also recommend Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s We Should All Be Feminists because I recommend it to everyone, and Ta-Nehisi Coates’ Between the World and Me is an important read for anyone right now (and always.)  Also, obviously, Treat Yourself!

Workman: Can you share a memorable experience from the early days of Mister Krisp?

Jessica: In Fall 2014, New York Magazine had requested a crispy version of a designer handbag, but I wasn’t sure if it would make it into the magazine. At the time, I jumped at every opportunity and didn’t ask a lot of questions. When I walked into my writing workshop a few months later, my professor, Susan Cheever, handed me a torn out page from their Holiday Gift Guide issue, and that was how I found out Misterkrisp had been included in the highly-competitive NY Mag Gift Guide!

If you could create a DREAM crispy for anyone who would it be for and what would it be?

Jessica: My dream crispie recipients would be the Obama family. I’d make their dogs, because I think they’d get a kick out of that. Dogs are among my most popular orders at Misterkrisp and I have a hunch that Former World Leaders: They’re Just Like US!

As we count down to the release of Treat Yourself! on June 27, be sure to follow along with Jessica’s crispy rice adventures every day on Instagram @mister_krisp.
